STS and UTHM have signed a memorandum of agreement (MoA) for research collaboration.
Researchers and students at Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) are to benefit from an initiative that seeks to build links between industry and researchers, as part of a project with SENA Traffic Systems (STS) Sdn Bhd to create smart city solutions in the country.
On 14th Jan 2019, STS and UTHM have signed a memorandum of agreement (MoA) for research collaboration. STS has contributed RM 1 million of funds for collaborative research projects between STS and UTHM. The main research aims to lead to the smart city campus that will be implemented in UTHM as a testbed.
To date, 9 research projects have been granted under this research fund. Among those projects, Model-Based Testing (MBT) using Source Code for software testing: A Case Study of Traffic Light System lead by Prof. Dr. Rosziati Ibrahim combines fundamental engineering and computational research that will tackle a level of detail never before attempted in such a simulation. All projects are to be completed within one year and involving the experts from STS and UTHM.
At the same time, MoA focuses on setting up a collaborative research laboratory known as UTHM-SENA Traffic System Laboratory located at Block QB, UTHM. At the moment, 2 units of 55” display, workstation, server, and traffic control system has been installed in the lab and used by researchers and students. This is to benefit both parties, with STS having a supply of skilled workforce and UTHM improving its skills in the field.
Starting from 1st June 2019, Datuk Ir Dr Leong Siew Mun has been appointed as Professor for SENA-UTHM Smart City Chair. His vast experience in the smart city system making him the most suitable candidate for the post, and he was also the Director of the Urban Transportation Department of DBKL. Until the end of 2019, he had delivered two knowledge-sharing sessions on the future of smart city systems for UTHM researchers and students, including during the PECIPTA 2019. UTHM is very supportive of what STS needs to achieve through these collaborative projects and is very responsive in terms of continually meeting industrial expectations.
